The Quaint Corner Children's Museum and Discovery Center is housed in a historic mansion built in 1893 by Daniel O'Rorke,
a prominent local contractor who also worked with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He and his wife, Mary Magdalene (Lynn) raised eight of their own
children and 3 of Mary's children from a previous marriage in this house. A total of 11 children! The architects who designed the house
were the Beezer Brothers, a nationally known firm who also designed the original Llyswen cottages on Logan Boulevard.
Daniel O'Rorke lived until 1909. For some years the house was split into apartments, until restored by the present owner.
"The house typifies Queen Anne architecture with examples of wooden relief, stained and beveled glass and gives the viewer a delightful example of the craftsmanship of early Altoona. It is a showcase in itself--the perfect place for a museum"--Sherron Miller, 1988. |

Founded in 1986 by Susan Foreman, whose dream of a place where children can touch, explore, and feel comfortable with the arts
became a reality. This Children's Museum is dedicated to Lucretia Wood, a teacher who brought wonder and music to her classroom. Who kindheartedly volunteered her time, to make this children's museum a better place from 1998-2001. Loved and sadly missed by all at Quaint Corner. |
The museum is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, staffed by volunteers. Donations of time, money and/or supplies are always
welcomed! "In 1982 a coffee and tea shop was opened in the three-story brick mansion. Two rooms of the house, which was once a studio used by voice and piano instructor Martha Roberts, were redecorated. The rooms' decor capitalizes on the beveled and stained glass windows, hardwood floors and carved French doors of the 1890s home." "After several years in the planning, a Quaint Corner children's museum now occupies most of the remainder of the historical site." --Debbie Epple, Altoona Mirror, 1987. |
