The Quaint Corner Children's Museum and Discovery Center is housed in a historic mansion built in 1893 by Daniel O'Rorke, a prominent local contractor who also worked with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He and his wife, Mary Magdalene (Lynn) raised eight of their own children and 3 of Mary's children from a previous marriage in this house. A total of 11 children! The architects who designed the house were the Beezer Brothers, a nationally known firm who also designed the original Llyswen cottages on Logan Boulevard. Daniel O'Rorke lived until 1909. For some years the house was split into apartments, until restored by the present owner.

"The house typifies Queen Anne architecture with examples of wooden relief, stained and beveled glass and gives the viewer a delightful example of the craftsmanship of early Altoona. It is a showcase in itself--the perfect place for a museum"--Sherron Miller, 1988.

The Quaint Corner Children's Museum and Discover Center is a great location for children's birthday parties! Parties can be booked on any day the museum is open, and other days by special arrangement. Partygoers have full access to all the public areas of the museum.

Cost:

Scheduled days fill up fast, so parties should be booked at least 2 weeks in advance.

Party area includes the use of 2 large Victorian themed rooms which can be connected for a large party or kept small.
Bring your own food and decorations!

A Quaint Corner Children's Museum and Discover Center

Founded in 1986 by Susan Foreman, whose dream of a place where children can touch, explore, and feel comfortable with the arts became a reality.

This Children's Museum is dedicated to Lucretia Wood, a teacher who brought wonder and music to her classroom.

In Loving Memory of Betty M. Simington

Who kindheartedly volunteered her time, to make this children's museum a better place from 1998-2001. Loved and sadly missed by all at Quaint Corner.

The museum is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, staffed by volunteers. Donations of time, money and/or supplies are always welcomed!

"In 1982 a coffee and tea shop was opened in the three-story brick mansion. Two rooms of the house, which was once a studio used by voice and piano instructor Martha Roberts, were redecorated. The rooms' decor capitalizes on the beveled and stained glass windows, hardwood floors and carved French doors of the 1890s home."

"After several years in the planning, a Quaint Corner children's museum now occupies most of the remainder of the historical site."

--Debbie Epple, Altoona Mirror, 1987.

Mission Statement

"The mission is to expose as many children as possible to the fun of learning through a hands-on approach and to emphasize the importance of family values, caring about the community, and growing up to be productive members of society."

Reason for the Museum

"The Museum was founded: to promote creative thought in children, to foster appreciation of history, art and science through a hands-on approach, to increase an awareness of the cultural richness of early Altoona, and to motivate the community to become involved in this on-going cultural pursuit."

Art Classes by Emily Dimov-Gottshall

Private Art Classes/Rates available starting at $75 for 10 students (all supplies included)

Fall Art Classes
at the Museum!

Time: 3:30 pm to 5 pm.

Cost: Free with a suggested donation of $5

Classes: 1st series Clay (for the month of September)
The object of the basic clay class is to expose youth to 3- Dimensional
objects and foster thinking beyond a flat surface.
Students would begin with a simple paper mache project. Once this was
accomplished they would be encouraged to take paperclay and "enhance"
this sculpture in a different and unique way. Their designs would be
given a finishing coat of paint and varnish. Pieces created by the
artists would be displayed in the gallery on the 1st floor as well as
local libraries. We will exhibit the work on the website for Quaint
Corner as well (www.quaintcorner.org).

2nd series Painting (for the month of October)
The object of the painting class would be an introduction to basic
painting skills using watercolor paints. Once 2 paintings have been
accomplished, young artists would be allowed to experiment with more
traditional medium, acrylic paints. Paintings would be chose by the
artist after a simple critique to be displayed in the art gallery on
the 1st floor as well. We would encourage artists to promote and
market their work, learn skills in basic business management as well
as creating pieces they enjoy and want to share with others.

3rd series Mixed Media (for the month of November)
The mixed media workshop would touch on a combination of art skills
from layering work with paper, collages, painting and print making.
This class would create pieces that incorporated both traditional and
non-traditional elements to create new pieces as well as
encourage "thinking outside the box". Students would be encouraged to
bring objects from home, found objects, recycled boxes, paper, cans,
etc and would create art works that directly change everyday objects
from their own environment. The purpose of this class is to create
awareness in how we view art and that it's not just something in a
museum but is directly created from our own hands and points of view.
Again, we would display the art pieces in 1st floor gallery and work
on how the artist can market their work and understand basic business
management skills.

We will have a few Holiday themed pieces with time allowance.

Space is limited. If we get another grant, we will aim to have
morning art classes at a later date.

Age: Is based on the interest level of the child and the involvement of the parent.

Donations Wish List

The Quaint Corner Children's Museum and Discovery Center is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Much of our growth depends on contributions, both monetary and in the form of supplies.

Our donation "wish list" for non-monetary donations:

  • Art Supplies! Paper, non-toxic paints, glue, glitter, scissors
  • Costumes that your children have outgrown.
  • Bags of Play Sand, always useful for renewing the largest indoor sandbox in Blair County
  • A glass-front refrigerator, the kind used to sell cold drinks in stores
  • A washer and dryer. This will simplify many cleaning and washing tasks at the museum.
