Compiled by Rev. N.B. Grubb. Copyrighted 1924 By Rev. N.B. Grubb. This Publication of the Gottshall Family is Gratefully Dedicated to the Memory of Rev. Harvey Gottshall Allebach [5] PREFACE For more than twenty-five years the undersigned has been collecting data of the Gottshall Family with the hope that some day it might be used for publication. At the same time the late Rev. H.G. Allebach who was also interested in the history of his ancestors, was collecting data; neither knowing what the other was doing. In 1905 Rev. Allebach with several others invited the Gottshall clan to join in a reunion to be held at the homestead of the late William Z. Gottshall, then the property of the late Moses. C. Gottshall. On August 24, 1905, in response to the invitations sent out, a large number of Gottshalls gathered and enjoyed a pleasant social time, renewing the friendship of old acquaintances and meeting and making many new friends. Some family relics were on exhibition as also an incomplete record of the descendants of William Z. Gottshall which was prepared by Rev. Allebach. An organization was then effected to be known as the Gottshall Family Association with the following officers: President, Rev. William S. Gottshall. Vice-President, Moses C. Gottshall. Secretary, Anna M. Gottshall. Treasurer, Rev. Harvey S. Gottshall Historian, Rev. Harvey G. Allebach Since then reunions were held every year except 1916 and 1920. At the 1922 reunion it was decided that the genealogy and history be published. Meanwhile Rev. Allebach had died and Rev. Robert J. Gottschall was elected historian with the undersigned as assistant. At the meeting a year later the undersigned was elected historian with the request that he prepare the history for publication. After the death of Rev. Allebach all his Gottshall records were turned over to me. Most of this collection was in very bad shape and much of it was either mutilated or partly destroyed so that it became difficult to use. All, however, was very valuable to help straighten out the family connections. To collect the needed data and compile the record was not an [6] easy task. Several hundred letters were written and sent to the different families, soliciting the needed facts. Many of those receiving letters responded promptly, while in a number of cases a second and a third letter went out before any result was obtained. A number of trips by rail, trolley and auto had to be made to finally get the facts desired. It is to be regretted that a few families were indifferent and could not be interested enough to give the desired information. This fact accounts for the incomplete records of several of the families. In the following pages is given the record of the descendants of William Z. Gottshall, the fifth generation. To this is added an appendix showing the different lines of ancestors dating back to 1550. Philadelphia, Pa., August 1, 1924. Following are the present officers of the Association: President, Rev. Robert J. Gottschall. Vice-President, Frank C. Gottschall. Secretary, Anna M. Gottschall. Historian, Rev. N.B. Grubb NOTE: The Roman Numerals in front of the names indicate the generation, from Rev. Jacob Gottshall, viz.: I Rev. Jacob Gottshall II Gottshall Gottshall III William Gottshall IV Gottshall Gottshall V William Z. Gottshall Philadelphia. July 15, 1924 [signed] N.B. Grubb, Historian [7] INTRODUCTION In these days of family reunions and the publication of family histories, there seems to be a justifiable reason for the publication of a history of the Gottshall family. Our ancestors were among the pioneer settlers of the State of Pennsylvania and a pious people they were of a sturdy stock of which their descendants may well feel grateful. Their sterling qualities made them important factors in the early days of our country's history in shaping the religious, moral and educational conditions of the communities in which they lived. Their numerous descendants are now scattered over a wide extent of territory where they are wielding a wholesome influence for good; but this fact greatly lessened their opportunity for personal contact and has the tendency of estrangement between those of near kin. About twenty years ago the need for holding a family reunion for the purpose of preserving our acquaintance and filial relationship was felt by some members of the family, and three of these, of which the writer is the sole survivor, assumed the responsibility of arranging for such an occasion. These annual gatherings have been a great pleasure to those who were privileged to participate. To honor our ancestors properly and appreciate our family history of which we were more or less ignorant, it became necessary for some one to gather facts and data. In this great task the Association had called Rev. H.G. Allebach who proved a very competent person for the position of a family historian, but his early demise left the work incomplete. The Association then called upon Rev. N.B. Grubb to complete the family history as near as possible and this volume is the result of the faithful and untiring efforts of the family historian. Every loyal member of the Gottshall family will greatly appreciate the distinctive service our historians have rendered to the family, and no doubt this volume will greatly increase their interest in the history of our family and its distinguished personalities, and make them all better acquainted with those who [8] are still living; and be an inspiration to all to prove ourselves worthy of our noble ancestors and create an ambition in the present generation to be the progenitors of an equally noble posterity. W.S. Gottshall Bluffton, Ohio June 16, 1924 [9] REASONS FOR THE EMIGRATION OF OUR ANCESTORS If we want to find the reason for the coming of our ancestors to America it will require but a brief investigation of conditions as they existed in Europe at that time, especially in Germany, to show that in the hearts of thousands there was a longing desire to forsake the Fatherland and seek homes elsewhere, where they might start life anew under more favorable conditions. The ravages of the Thirty Years' War had left Germany almost a wilderness and the cruel invasion of the Palatinate by the French in 1693 with its consequent pestilence and famine only added to the desperation of the many who felt that no matter where they might cast their lots they could not be worse and perhaps better their condition. Some few had already left for America. The safe arrival of the first thirteen families in Philadelphia, and founded Germantown, was known to the extent that many others hoped to join them in that new country from which favorable reports were filtering in. As early as 1677 William Penn and his fellow Quaker missionaries had been circulating in numerous quarters in Holland and Germany and his "Brief Account of the Province of Pennsylvania," published in 1681 found readers whose interest was aroused in a country under the rule of so staunch an apostle of peace as Penn. Naturally the thoughts of numerous inhabitants of the war-torn countries turned in the direction of this Province. To the Mennonites agreeing so largely with the Quakers in their attitude toward the waging of war, Pennsylvania seemed the Promised Land waiting for them. Religious intolerance in Europe continued without interruption. In Switzerland the Government was still persecuting Mennonites and continued to drive them out for many years following. The Rhine Valley was full of refugees, wandering in search of a land where they might be left alone to worship God as their consciences dictated and in accord with what they believed to be the plain teaching of the Scripture. Like them, the Quakers had endured for their faith and been fugitives on the face of the earth until they found the opportunity for their [10] commonwealth beyond the great Atlantic, but unlike the Quakers, the Mennonite had no great leader in fortunate circumstances who might be found for them a haven and a refuge away from the war-torn lands in which they lived. Penn's invitation to come and live in peace and plenty in his fair province appeared to them as nothing short of providential. The extreme poverty of the time from which the poor had no chance of escape in Europe had its bearing upon the determination to emigrate. In America at least there was land in abundance waiting for the application of brawn and energy that was to make it fruitful enough to insure all they hoped for--enough to keep body and soul together. From the first Mennonites have been a traditional pioneer people, a characteristic they have maintained to this day. With them the spirit of adventure and the desire for wealth was hardly a motive for their brave undertaking in anew land. What they wanted most was a place where they might live in peace and bring up their children in the fear of God and the faith in Him for which so many had to pay so dearly in lives and possessions. Silas M. Grubb. July 15, 1924 [11] A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE GOTTSHALL FAMILY ASSOCIATION The first Annual Reunion of the Gottshall family was held near Schwenksville on the Gottshall farm, August 24, 1905. This was due to the general interest in Family Reunions prevalent at that time and to the personal stimulus of Rev. Harvey G. Allebach, of Green Lane, Pa. Who had made researches into the history of the family. Reunions have been held annually since that time with two exceptions, 1916 and 1920. Mr. Allebach was Family Historian from 1905 to the time of his death in 1921. He had always expressed a desire to place in permanent form the results of his labors. To this end, personally, he published in August, 1910, a booklet entitled "Who's Who" in the Gottshall family. This book contains forty-two sketches of Representatives of the Family. In a succeeding volume he had planned to publish sketches of members of other branches of the Family. Volume One had a wide sale among the members of the Family, but the author did not live to finish his work. After the death of Mr. Allebach, Rev. Robert J. Gottschall, of Pennsburg, Pa., was elected Family Historian. The material which Mr. Allebach had collected was transferred to Rev. N.B. Grubb, of Philadelphia, who was a member of the Family and knew intimately the family history. Much of the material which Mr. Allebach had gathered was missing and a good deal of it had been mutilated, much to the regret of the compiler. At the next reunion Mr. Grubb was elected Family Historian and he at once began to compile more material. With the help of the Officers of the Association, plans were laid to publish this material. This book is the result of these labors. In addition to the record of the members of the Family in America the editor has inserted a brief sketch of conditions in Europe which led their ancestors to emigrate from their native land. It had always been my hope to have this account as a part of the permanent record of the family. We point with pride to the record. The list of ministers, [12] educators, physicians, editors and public officials is a testimony to the life and training given us by our forefathers, who were God-fearing men and women. We hope that we the younger race may find in our own lives their love of peace and kind and their lowly, lofty mind. So doing we may perchance "wear their crown." Robert Jacob Gottschall Norristown, Pa. June 23, 1924 [13] REUNION HYMN Rev. H. G. Allebach Tune--America [Webmaster's Note: "My Country Tis of Thee"] On this Reunion Day Honor we come to pay To fathers brave, Who under God o'ercame, Suffered from sword and flame, In Truth and Freedom's name Their all they gave. Pray God who gave them grace That we the younger race From farm and town, Their love of peace and kind, Their lowly, lofty mind, In our own lives may find, And wear their crown. Beyond the stormy sea, In Pennsylvania free, A home they found; Here in the fear of God They tilled the virgin sod, Blossomed the quickened clod Their hearthstone round. [14] Rev. Jacob Gottshall and Descendants [I] Rev. Jacob Gaedschalk, the common ancestor of the numerous Gottshall families in America, was born about 1670. Came from Gog, in the community of Cleeves [Webmaster's note: present-day Kleve, Germany], * near the border of Holland and the Rhine country, came to America, some historians say in 1699, but it is more likely that he came and settled in Germantown, in 1702. Here he united with the Mennonite congregation and was soon elected a deacon of the church and later he was elected a minister. At the same time Hans Neus was also elected a minister, but he failed to accept the call and soon separated himself from the church on account of a difficulty he had with one of the members, feeling that injustice had been done to him and never returned. In 1720 Neus purchased a tract of land, 750 acres, in Frederick Township and made that hishome where he became the ancestor of the numerous Nice family. In 1708 Gottshall wrote to Holland in which he gives the history of the origin of the Germantown Mennonite church, also stating the fact that Rev. William Rittenhouse had died in the month of March, 1708, to the great sorrow of the congregation; and that now he was the only surviving minister. On May 9, 1708 eleven persons were baptized and addd to the church, and two weeks later, May 23, 1708, the communion of the Lord's Supper was administered. At these services Rev. Gottshall officiated. These two services were the first baptismal and communion services conducted by Mennonites in America. On October 21, 1702, Gottshall purchased a tract of fifty acres of land from Isaac Shoemaker. On this tract he erected [15] a quaint, low but substantial house and lived here for twelve years when he removed to Towamencin Township. The house fronted on Germantown Avenue. The exact spot is now 5273 Germantown Avenue, a close neighbor to Dennis Conrad, one of the original settlers in Germantown, who came in 1683 to America on the good ship Concord. A deed on record in Philadelphia recites the fact that Rev. Gottshall purchased 120 acres of land from James Shattuck in Towamencin Township. The consideration of this purchase being 36 pounds. The deed bears date of February 30, 1713-4 and was acknowledged April 20, 1714. At the same time his son Gottshall Gottshall purchased from the same party 120 acres, adjoining his father's tract. The consideration was the same and the deed bears the same dates as that of his father's. In 1708 Gottshall joined with four other brethren in a letter to Amsterdam, asking for some catechisms for the children and little testaments for the young, stating that only one Bible was among the membership of the church. In 1728 the Mennonite confession of faith was translated into English and printed by Bradford, in Philadelphia, and Gottshall was one of the signers testifying to the correctness of the translation. Again on October 19, 1745, he joined with five others asking for assistance to translate Martyr's Mirror from the Dutch into German. Altho no answer came from Holland the brethren in America arranged for the translation and had the book printed at Ephrata. Gottshall and Dielman Kolb carefully read and corrected the proofs. Rev. Gottshall was a literary man and capable to use three languages, Dutch, German and English. Rev. Gottshall made his Will in 1760, indicating that he was a man of great age and as to occupation he says, "Formerly while I was able a turner." He died in 1763, aged about ninety-seven years. While it is not known where his mortal remains are buried, but it is only natural to suppose that he was buried in the grave yard adjoining the Towamencin Mennonite Church, near Kulpsville. His wife, whose name is not known, died prior to 1706. [16] Rev. Gottshall had five children, three sons and two daughters, viz.: II Gottshall Gottshall married Eva Custer. John Gottshall, died in 1759 . Married Helena [blank] Herman Gottshall. Anna Gottshall married Peter Custer. No doubt the brother to Gottshall's wife. Magdalena Gottshall was the second wife of William Nash. She died prior to 1763. II Gottshall Gottshall, son of Rev. Jacob, was born in 1693 and died in 1748. His brother Garrett Gottshall married Hester Ziegler, the sister to Gottshall Gottshall's wife. After the death of his father, William, he purchased land in Frederick Township, near [17] Schwenksville, and moved there in 1781. He purchased land from time to time until he owned 400 acres. Most of this land had belonged to the Perkiomen Copper Mine Company, chartered by Act of Assembly in 1772. At his death he had left 246 acres of land. This was equally divided between his two sons, Dillman and William. That part of the land has been in the family five generations for 143 years, 1781-1924. The present owner is Newton S. Gottshall. VII Child died at birth. Rev. Moses H. Gottshall was ordained to the Ministry in the Schwenksville Mennonite Church, 12-3-1847. He was ordained to the full office of the ministry, a Bishop, in 1852. He pre- sided over this church as pastor and Bishop for a period of forty-one years. He preached his last sermon at the Deep Run Mennonite Church, Bucks County, over which he also presided as Bishop, 10-21-1888, and passed to his rest four days later. A tribute to the memory of Rev. Moses H. Gottshall, by his grandson, Rev. Harvey G. Allebach. Rev. Moses H. Gottshall was noted far and wide as one. of the most naturally eloquent ministers of his time in Montgomery County. This impression was shared by ministers and laymen alike of every denomination. There are few people of fifty years ago or over who lived in the northern half of the county at that time who do not recall his unique personality on and off the pulpit. His paternal grandfather, Gottshall Gottshall, had moved from Towamencin to Frederick Township in 1781, and bought a tract of land which contained 100 acres, one mile west of [55] Schwenksville. Here Moses H. Gottshall was born and lived all his life. As a boy Moses H. Gottshall was an ardent student of the Bible, of keen mind and extraordinary powers of effective ex- pession. His father was a deacon in the Mennonite Church, and Moses was reared in that faith. At that time ministers were chosen out of the congregation and by lot. On December 3, 1847, the lot fell on him, and he became pastor of the Schwenksville Mennonite Church and continued pastor of that church for a period of forty-one years. As a. evidence of esteem in which he was held to the end of his life no less than twenty-seven ministers, representing a variety of denominations attended the funeral services. His education, mostly in the German language, was very lim- ited. He learned to read the German readily, and his main literary sources of inspiration were the Bible and several old volumes of sermons. He never prepared notes for use on the pulpit; his method of preparation being to close his eyes and to mumble his discourse in a subdued tone to himself. On the pulpit be drenv illustrations from everyday life; his eyes kindled, his face became animated, and his earnest dramatic manner held the spellbound attention of all. The whole man, with all his weight of character also projected itself into the utterance. His genial individuality, so well known and relished in everyday association, was a never-failing element of force in the sermon. For forty-one years, 1847-1888, he preached the gospel at Schwenksville, Pa., in connection with several other points. He was a close friend and co-worker with Rev. John H. Oberholtzer. I remember the high tribute Father Oberholtzer paid to him while both were living. "There is no man among us that can match him." It was Oberholtzer that melted all hearts at Gottshall's funeral by indulging in a flood of personal reminiscences, revealing the David and Jonathan friendship that had existed between them so long, and setting a halo of glory upon the crown of esteem the departed had already worn before death. Like John Knox, Moses Gottshall did not fear the face of man. He spared no one in his fiery zeal for righteousness against iniquity. His presence in the sick room was a benediction. He came to minister to the needy soul, but God often mysteriously used [56] his Ministrations for the healing Of soul and body. When he repeated those soul-stirring words, "Lo, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me." It was as though the Good Shepherd Himself was by the sick man's side. Green Lane, Pa. 1910. VII Catharine Gottshall, born 6-25-1841; died 1-6-1912. Mar- ried John M. Benjamin and Lydia Sommer Eicher, 12-29-1897. She was born 2-17-1875. One child: IX J. Frederick Allebach, born 9-17-1900. Rev. Harvey G. Allebach was born in Lower Salford Town- ship, Pennsylvania. At the age of nearly two years he lost his mother and then for several years he lived with his maternal grandfather, Rev. Moses H. Gottshall, near Schwenksville. When his father married again he went home to his father, in Green Lane, where he grew to manhood. He received his edu- cation in the public schools and Ursinus College, and after the necessary preparation he entered the University of Pennsyl- vania, where he graduated with honors. He taught in the public schools for some years and for several years he, was principal of several High schools in his native county. He also taught for one year in the East Orange, New Jersey, Collegiate Institute for young women, conducted by the late Rev. Ann J. Allebach, his sister. Early in life he felt the inner call to the Gospel ministry, and labored as an evangelist and was ordained to the office of minister by his uncle, Rev. William S. Gottshall, and served as a supply in his home church and elsewhere; frequently assisting Rev. N. B. Grubb, pastor of the First Mennonite Church of Philadelphia, where he was an active worker for several years while a student at the University. In 1894 he accepted a call to the Noble and Wayland, Iowa Mennonite churches, succeeding Rev. Benjamin Eicher, and for [58] several years he labored there with marked success. The Foreign Mission Board of the General Conference then extended a call to him to labor in the mission feld among the Arapahoe Indians, in Oklahoma, which he accepted, but at the end of one year he resigned and returned to Pennsylvaia and assumed charge of the Pottstown and Boyertown congregations. Early in 1901 he accepted the call of the General Conference Publication Board to become the editor of The Mennonite, the English organ of the General Conference of the Mennonite Church of North America. After several years of faithful serv- ice, on account of impaired health, he was obliged to resign the editorship., but still continued to contribute to its columns. His pen,. however, was still busy in writing for several magazines. Meanwhile he established and edited the Topical Sunday School Lessons. After the death of the late Rev. A. B. Shelly, in 1914, he was called to the pastorate of the Swamp charge, succeeding Rev. A. B. Shelly. In the faithful discharge of the arduous duties of this large charge he again broke down in health. With the hope of recovery, he was given a leave of absence for six months, and went to the Sanitarium at White Haven, Pa. After his return he again resumed the work, but soon again his strength began to wane, and again returned to the Sanitarium. Again he was improving and hoped for complete recovery. In this hopeful condition he contracted a severe cold which de- veloped into pneumonia, from which he never recovered. De- cember 3, 1921, he passed peacefully from this life, aged 52 years, 9 months and 15 days. So ended the life of a good man who feared God above many. His remains were brought to Schwenksville where funeral services were conducted by his close friend, Rev. N. B. Grubb, and Rev. Victor B. Boyer, as- sisted by several other ministers. Six of the ministering brethren then carried his mortal remains to the Mennonite ceme- tery and committed them to mother earth, in the assured hope of a blessed resurrection through Jesus Christ, our Lord into everlasting life. [105] [Illustration] [106] THE CLEMENS FAMILY Mr. Lewis Waldemar Clemens, of the Royal Colonial Insti- tute, of Toronto, Canada, has for a number of years untiringly searched the family records of the Clemens family back through the archives of Ottawa and has carefully traced the ancestry of the official records of England and Holland, with such success that his complete work has been passed upon by The College of Arms, England, and after strict scrutiny has received the official approval of that institution. Mr. Clemens bas traced an ubroken record of the family ancestry back to the sixteenth century, to one I Clement of Toft, Lincolnshire, Eigland. He was the father of II William Clement, of Wissingsett, Norfolkshire, to whom in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, in the year 1563, the Family Arms were granted by the visitation of Norfolk, made by William Harvev, Clarencieux King of Arms, South of Trent, and Confirmed by John Raven, Richmond Herald, in the year 1613. The wife of William Clement was one Ann Nernon. They had three children George, Thomas and Edmund. III George Clement, niarried Audry Denny, daughter of John Denny, of Chishunt, and widow of John Haydon, of Longham. IV George Clement, son of George and Audry, became Puritans and together with ten or twelve others were beheaded in the year 1660, upon the restoration of the crown to Charles, for having signed with Oliver Cromwell and fifty-seven others, the warrant for the execution of Charles the First, 1648. They had a son Jacob. V Jacob Clement, born 1651, was nine years old when his father, George Clement, was beheaded. He and his elder brother John also became Puritans and when Jacob was eighteen years of age, the two brothers came out to America in 1669. Jacob afterwards returned to England and in 1677 he was married there to a woman whose Christian name only has been recorded, Mary. The records show that on account of religious persecution Jacob and his wife, Mary, crossed over to Holland, where [107] they made their home. In Holland the name was changed from the original Norman form to the Dutch form, "Clemens." They had three sons, Gerhard, John and Jacob. Tradition says that John was a merchant and unmariied and settled in New York. Tradition also says that Jacob located somewhere in Chester County, Pa. Very little is known of his descendents, only that there are Clemences there that have not as yet been connected with the family. VI Gerhard Clemens arrived in America and was in New York for a little while. In 1709 he came to Lower Salford, and in 1718 he purchased a tract of land containing 300 acres. He purchased land adjoining his 300 acres until he was the owner of 690 acres which he claimed as his own, and which was con- firmed to him by a patent dated the 15th day of April, 1734. Here he built his home and had for his neighbors Andrew Lederach, Dielman Kolb and Hans Ulrich Berge. The original homestead is now in possession of Rhine Clemens, of the seventh generation from Gerhard. Only the Christian name of Gerhard Clemens' wife is known, ANN. Gerhard and Ann Clemens had three sons and two daughters, Abraham, John, Jacob, Ann and the wife of George Wagley. Abraham Hunsberger was a great singer. During the Revolutionary War, while the British under Genera1 Howe were in possession of Philadelphia, they tried to prevent the farmers from bringing their prcduce to market in order to starve the Americans who sympathized with the struggle for American liberty or else to compel them to surrender. Yet the farmers needed the market, and so many watched their opportunity to sneak into the city and Supply their customers with the usual amount of the necessaries of life. It was at a great risk that this was done and sometimes the farmers were caught and im- prisoned. Thus it was that Abraham Hunsberger, the father of Magdalena, wife of William Z. Gottshall, undertook to supply his customers when he was caught by the British and was locked up. His prospects were anything but bright for freedom. He was a sweet singer, and gifted with musical talent and had a " faith that would not shrink on the brink of any woe, tho pressed by every foe." He was of cheerful spirit, and instead of showing fear and discouragement he sang all through the night and so charmed and entertained his guards with the sweet strains of music. They were so delighted with his jovial disposition and his exquisite music that the next morning they left him go on [112] his way rejoicing. This appropriate weapon was so forcefully used by this non-resistant Mennonite, and was more effective in conquering the British than the American musket. Truly, music has charms. The compiler of this work has a copy of a manuscript music book of which Abraham Hunsberger was the author and bears his signature under date of August 31, 1815. The contents are written in German.
